Broadway Holding Auditions For New "Spider-Man" Musical

New York, NY (CNS) - Broadway is looking for a new Spider-Man. Not to replace current Spidey played by Tobey Maguire, but a Spiderman that can sing and dance on the Great White Way.
The creators of the upcoming Broadway musical "Spider-Man" are holding an open casting call for the leading roles of Peter Parker (played by Maguire in the movie franchise) and Mary Jane (played by Kirsten Dunst in the movie).
The creators of the new musical include "Lion King" director Julie Taymor and the show's composer, Bono.
According to the casting agency, for the stage version of Parker the role is described as "male, 16-20s, great Rock voice, can be nerdy with understated sex appeal, good sense of humor."
Mary Jane, on the other hand, should be "female, 16-20s, beautiful girl next door, strong pop/rock singing voice."
Those wishing to try out should prepare 16 bars of a pop-rock song that demonstrates range. A photo and resume (stapled together) are also desired.
The audition is set for Monday, July 28, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Knitting Factory in Lower Manhattan

I'm a little bit curious to see who will be the Broadway Mary Jane. With Julie Taymor and Bono's help behind the curtain, I'm sure the Broadway version will become a hit as well.

Well, it seems a bit strange to me that it was necessary to put requirements of "male" for Peter, and "female" for MJ. Was there a question abt these matters?

I think you never know... in theater it was and it is still sometimes fact that man are played by woman...... so telling that MJ must be female and Peter male was a seroius background.

Now we finally know: the Mary Jane Watson on Broadway will be played by Evan Rachel Wood.
She?s been signed up to co-star in the Spider-Man musical by her Across The Universe director Julie Taymor.Planning to hit the stage in 2010, the show starts rehearsals next year and will feature music from U2?s Bono and The Edge and is planned as a huge, lavish stage experience. And according to Wood, who spoke to IESB, Taymor is looking to recruit fellow Universe actor Jim Sturgess to play Peter Parker.

If you still want to be a superhero or a rockstar when you grow up, here?s your chance!
Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark, U2?s upcoming Broadway musical based on Spiderman, is set to debut in early 2010, so the boys are putting out the call for auditions.
Apparently, Kirsten Dunst likes to date rockers, but she can?t sing-the role of Mary Jane is up for grabs on Broadway, along with the roles of Peter Parker and assorted villains.
Auditions begin April 9, and according to the press release posted online, ?Regardless of experience, anyone who thinks they might be qualified is encouraged to audition.?
Keep reading for the complete list of audition dates and locations.
U2/Spiderman Auditions:
Orlando, FL
Thursday, April 9
New York, NY
Monday, April 13
Los Angeles, CA
Saturday, April 18
Seattle, WA
Monday, April 20
Chicago, IL
Thursday, May 7
Austin, TX
Wednesday, May 27
According to the press release, these are the open roles (for stars and understudies):
Peter Parker: 16-20s. Must have a great rock tenor voice. Can be nerdy with understated sex appeal and a good sense of humor.
Mary Jane: 16-20s. Beautiful girl next door. Strong pop/rock singing voice required.
Lead Female Villain - 25-35 years old. All ethnicities encouraged. Must have an amazing rock voice. Think Sinead O?Connor with a Middle Eastern/Bulgarian/Greek twist. Foreign and/or world music types are great. Foreign accents are great.?
And remember, if your audition for the U2 show doesn?t work out, you can still audition to be in Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan is holding auditions for a new drummer later this month.

Actress EVAN RACHEL WOOD has signed to star as MARY JANE WATSON in the new SPIDER-MAN stage musical.
Two months after the show's director Julie Taymor denied Wood would play the web-slinging superhero's love interest, the actress has confirmed to Moviefone.com she's preparing to make her Broadway debut in the show, which opens in New York next February (10).
She has been forced to pull out of plans to star in movie Sucker Punch to take on the stage project.
The other lead roles, including Peter Parker/Spider-Man, have yet to be cast.
The musical, which will feature tracks by U2 stars Bono and The Edge, will reunite Taymor with Wood - she previously directed the 21 year old in 2007 movie Across The Universe.

Spider-Man hasn't faced this much adversity since he battled Sandman, Venom and James Franco in his last movie. Now, the web-head's week from hell is getting worse — and it's only Tuesday.
Barely 24 hours after news broke that Sony and Marvel were putting the brakes on "Spider-Man 4" and saying goodbye to Sam Raimi's team, producers of a long-gestating Broadway musical about our friendly neighborhood web-slinger are being forced to offer refunds and pushing back their show's debut.
According to The Associated Press, producers of "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" are offering to return the money to theatergoers who purchased advance tickets for the show, which had been expected to open February 25. Although they are quick to point out that "the production is moving forward" and a new schedule should be announced shortly, it is the latest in a long line of troubles for the show.
Now boasting a budget that is reportedly in the $50 million range, "Turn Off the Dark" was first announced some time ago but has been going full-speed ahead for over a year now with Evan Rachel Wood onboard to play Mary Jane, Alan Cumming as the Green Goblin and newcomer Reeve Carney as Peter Parker. Directed by "Across the Universe" filmmaker Julie Taymor, the high-profile project also features original songs written by U2's Bono and The Edge.
In August 2009, production was suspended due to "cash-flow problems," and now Playbill.com is speculating that the opening will actually occur in the final months of 2010.
"Ticketmaster is contacting ticket-holders impacted by the delay," a statement from the producers reads. "Anyone who has purchased tickets may request a refund from Ticketmaster immediately, or wait for the announcement of the new performance schedule at which time further details for new dates and exchanges will be announced."
News of the lavish musical's difficulties comes only one day after the eagerly anticipated fourth "Spider-Man" movie was scuttled, officially ending the spectacularly successful cinematic pairing of Raimi with stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Sony and Marvel have announced their intention to begin work on rebooting the movie franchise from its high school roots with all-new talent.
