28 designers who define the decade, 28 women who define style, from Carine Roitfeld to Kylie Minogue, brought together by AnOther Magazine for a special collectors’ edition to mark the end of the decade.

AnOther Magazine has been given unprecedented access to the archives of the most important designers of the past ten years for this landmark project, pairing each of the 28 women with a collection by a different designer, encapsulating unique moments in a decade of fashion.

“At the end of this decade there should be a celebration of how far fashion and design have come, for the amazing new voices that have emerged and the reinventions which others have undergone. I am overjoyed that so many incredible women took part in this project; a chance to rise above these current fractured economic times and give real creativity in fashion its due.”

WITH the spring 2010 collections beginning in less than a week, let’s take a moment to reflect on what designers have wrought over the decade that is coming to an end. What will fashion of the aughties be remembered for, if anything more than hipster uniforms and the Olsen twins?

The latest issue of AnOther Magazine, on newsstands Sept. 18, tries to tackle the subject with what its editors describe as a celebration of the decade. Jefferson Hack, the editor in chief, said he had been looking back at the evolution of his magazine, which began in 2001, when he became intrigued by how much the whole industry had changed. The most esteemed houses of the 20th century had been taken over by conglomerates, while a new wave of designer upstarts were entering the business.

“Fashion kind of went from a cottage industry, or a romantic industry, to something more full-on that was defined by corporate culture,” he said.

An article by Susannah Frankel, the features editor, also notes how the rising trend of democratized style, through media and fast fashion, has created a tricky situation for high-end designers. The pressure they are facing is best encapsulated in a comment from Miuccia Prada: “You want to be understood by the sophisticated few, but you also have to be more loud, somehow; otherwise, your message doesn’t go through.” It remains a challenge to put your finger on just what was the message of the aughties, but perhaps that’s because we’re still living in them.

To illustrate the highlights, the editors chose pieces from 28 designers they considered most reflective of the decade. Those were photographed by Craig McDean and Hedi Slimane and worn by celebrities who were recruited because of their relationships with the designers.

Kate Moss wears a 2003 John Galliano ruffle dress, Winona Ryder a Marc Jacobs sequined top, and Kirsten Dunst a Rodarte knit with crystals from Swarovski (the sponsor of the issue). The resulting portfolio is especially striking, Mr. Hack noted, in light of the financial crisis that is likely to reshape fashion for decades to come.

“You really begin to appreciate the importance of creativity and the enthusiasm for change,” he said.
