The best thing about Disney redistributing this 1989 masterpiece isn't the behind-the-scenes extras (which ruin some of the magic, honestly), nor is it the pinned-on introduction from John Lasseter (can we just get to the movie?), but the accessibility of the film itself.
At just 7 years of age, Kirsten Dunst is pure innocence as the young witch, Kiki, imitating the gasps and grunts of traditional anime voices. Janeane Garofalo shines as Ursula, the "lesbian artist" character. Voice actor Tress MacNeille does a wonderful job as Osono, a baker with a bun in her oven, laughing loudly and with mirth at every turn. And, of course, Hayao Miyazaki's animation is resplendent.
But remember Phil Hartman? He of SNL, NewsRadio and The Simpsons fame comes back from the dead as Jiji, Kiki's always-present black cat companion, meowing, growling and gasping something wonderful. Hartman and his oil-slick voice are memorialized in roles like this.
The story dips into a jumble of themes, like goth vs. norms, Finnish culture and Kiki's latent anorexia (she screams all the pancakes she eats are making her "Fat! FAT! FAAAAATTTT!"). It's one of those "animations for all ages" things that probably keeps it juuust off Disney's priority list. When Kiki mentions that Garofalo's lesbian Ursula character asked to paint her portrait, Jiji screams: "NAKED?!" You can almost hear the Disney censors squirm in their seats.
